How does the Tool Library work?

The Mallacoota and District Tool Library is a not-for-profit incorporated association and is funded by annual memberships and loan fees for some tools.

Members must be over the age of 18 and live in Mallacoota or the surrounding district. By becoming a member, you can use the library as little or as often as you like. You can browse our tool inventory, and then collect the tools during opening hours.

Once you are a member with your own username and password, you can also reserve tools in advance through the website. All loans are for one week but can be renewed for an additional week.

What do I need when I apply for membership?

You will need to complete and sign two forms: an Application for Membership of the Tool Library Association and a Loan Agreement. You’ll need to bring a photo ID and proof of current address like a driver’s licence or current rates notice. We’ll also ask for your email address and mobile phone number.

How much is membership?

$60 for individual membership for the financial year or part thereof. You can pay your membership fee on-site either in cash or through a bank transfer on your phone. Note: we do not have the equipment to accept payment by card.

Once you have signed up and paid, you can borrow as many tools as you like in that financial year. Small loan fees do apply to high maintenance items.

When are you open?

The Tool Library is open twice a week on Thursdays from 9.00am to 11.00am and Saturdays from 10.00am to 12 noon.

How long can I borrow tools for?

Tools are loaned out for one week at a time and you must return the tools within 45 minutes of opening on the day they are due. This ensures they are available for others to borrow.

You can renew your loan for an additional week by emailing the tool number(s) to  madtoollibraryloans@gmail.com the day before they are due back. Please note that extensions aren’t always possible if someone has reserved the item after you. This ensures everyone has equal access to equipment.

Can I reserve tools ahead of time?

Yes, once you know your username and password, you can log in to the Tool Library's software (MyTurn) and select and reserve the tools you want up to four weeks in advance (watch this video to see how).

To learn more about reserving tools in advance, visit us during opening hours, email madtoollibraryloans@gmail.com with your query or try setting up your Username and Password yourself by following these simple instructions.

What tools do you have available?

Find out what tools we have available here. Our library is constantly growing and changing. If we don’t have something you want let us know and we can add it to our most wanted tool list.

You can also borrow personal protective equipment as part of your loan if you do not have your own. This includes hearing protection, eye protection and chaps and helmets with face guards when using chainsaws. Safety first people!

Can other people use the tools I borrow?

No, sorry. If anything happens to anyone using tools borrowed under your name, you are potentially liable. You are also responsible for any damage to the tools.

Where can I find the manual for the tool?

Almost every tool has a manual available on its webpage, for example this circular saw. Look for the User Manual button and click on it. Please always read and understand the manual so the tool is used correctly.

What happens if I damage or break a tool?

Please let us know the details as soon as possible. You are responsible for any damage to a tool during your loan but our main aim is to assess it and repair it so we can loan it out again. As always, honesty is the best policy.

Why do some tools have loan fees?

Tools requiring regular maintenance have a $5 or $10 loan fee. Each tool's webpage includes any loan fees that apply. Generally, tools that have a blade, chain or motor have a loan fee. We charge loan fees because must ensure we cover the costs of running the Library.

Are the tools safe to use?

All our electrical tools are regularly tested and tagged, and our volunteers work weekly to clean, repair, and maintain our tools. Most tools have a manual on their webpage. Please read it before you start.

We do rely on you, our members to:

  • Know what you’re doing when you use a tool and always wear appropriate safety gear. Our librarians are happy to offer advice and direct you to resources, but we’re not experts in every tool;

  • Let us know if a tool isn’t working correctly or if you’re unsure of how to use it safely. If unsure, please stop using the tool and let us know ASAP;

  • Borrow appropriate personal protective equipment as part of your loan if you do not have your own. This includes hearing protection, eye protection and chaps and helmets with face guards when using chainsaws.

How do I volunteer?

We’re always looking for volunteers and will help you to find your perfect role. Find out more here.

Why are there so many Daves at the library?

Clearly in the 1950s and 60s, David was a popular name but we don't mind having so many Davids since it's marvellous what a difference a Dave makes; these are the Daves of our lives after all!
